Endodontics

The part of the tooth that is above the gum and visible in the mouth is called the crown; the part that is invisible in the mouth and inside the bone is called the root. Teeth consist of several layers. The outermost layer is the enamel layer seen above the gingival margin. There is a structure called dentin under the enamel layer. Under the enamel and dentin, which are the outer tissues of the tooth, is the pulp tissue, which is a soft connective tissue and forms the living part of the tooth, popularly known as the “nerve of the tooth”. During the growth and development of a tooth, the pulp’s job is to nourish it. When inflammation (decay) develops in a tooth, the pulp tissue transmits pain, signaling that the tooth is damaged or inflamed.

Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with and treats problems that have progressed to the dental pulp.

Root Canal Treatment in Tooth with Apical Lesion

Infections due to bacterial contamination at the root tip cause bone destruction and cysts may develop in these areas. This condition can be diagnosed clinically with pain and swelling in the area or radiographically without any pain symptoms.

The treatment of such a tooth can be done with dressings made through the root canal, and in teeth that do not respond to treatment, it may be necessary to surgically clean that area and resection of the tip 13 of the root. (Apical Resection)
